At an analytical level, Holthe works with how the Norwegian society's
concepts about health and normality are played out in the therapeutic
life sciences. Georges Canguilhems book about the normal and the
pathological from 1930 serves as one point of departure in this
respect. Canguilhem writes: "
Being healthy means being not only normal in a given situation but
also normative in this and other eventual situations. What
characterises health is the possibility of transcending the norm,
which defines the momentary normal, the possibility of tolerating
infractions of the habitual norm and instituting new norms in new
situations." (Canguilhem, Georges (1931): The normal and the
pathological. Zone Books, New York).
